I have recently gotten very into solo boardgaming and was surprised to discover just how many solo boardgames are out there. I don't want to list them all (unless you all make me) as I am still looking for a few and if I list them i will end of bidding against you some of you on ebay ( and I know I won't win).
But what i will be doing in the near future is breaking each down for its solo miniature wargaming potential. There are quite a bit that have a lot to offer for our solo miniature wargames and I dare say we can learn a lot from the solo boardgame designers.
So just a teaser for now but stay tuned...
This month I wanted to bring attention to a particularly promising new solo wargaming publisher, Dan Verssen Games at http://www.dvg.com. DVG currently has two solo games, Field Commander Rommel and Field Commander Alexander the Great. I haven't played either but from viewing the website they both appear to be "new" games and not simply two player games with "new solitaire" rules. I am particularly appreciative that with this being a new system, the author has made an modern as well as an "ancients" period product so that wargamers at both ends of the spectrum can sample the games and see if it appeals to them.
I'll definitely keep my eye on their site and let you know when I get some official "solo reviews" of the products or when their next title is released!
While we have been down, we have not been out! At least we did not mean to be. Anyway my prior "free" server at mypodcast did not appreciate the long hiatus I took and terminated my site. Fortunately, I had all of the episodes except episode 1 stored on my computer and have spent the last few days porting them to the new home of The Solowargaming Show at podbean.com.
Not only is this a paid site but it has built in links for itunes and RSS feeds so all of that is right on the homepage. It will also allow me to do things like post pictures directly in the captions for each episode. I have updated the link to the left of this site so that it now takes you to the new website for the show. For all others the link is as follows:

As for a new episode, one should be up before this weekend is out!! It's just that time a year for giving and I guess I'm in the mood to be generous...
I have added a "Forums" section to the web page where you can view solo wargaming topics being discussed and leave your own comments. Nothing fancy just a private place for solo wargamers who may not get the specific type of comments they like at other forums. I will add a RSS feed to it so that those who subscribe will know when a new comment posts.
I have also updated the Solo Journal (blog) with information on the status of the podcast!
This episode of the Solowargaming Show Podcast features how to set up a Solo Wargaming Campaign. Books from four authors are reviewed analyzing their instructions and tips for starting a (solo) campaign. Another episode over one hour in length but definitely worth the download if you enjoy fighting wargame campaigns. Even if you don't game "solo" there is a lot in this episode that can be used for those looking to set up and umpire a campaign for two or more players as well.
As always we look forward to your comments and remarks!
If you click on the link in the navigation bar for "Upcoming Shows" you can vote in our poll for which upcoming show you would like to hear next. This will be a running poll and we will try to go down the list in order of most votes until we have done all the shows or they are preempted by other ideas!
Thanks!
Well we've made it to Episdoe 3 and as much work as it is putting the shows together, I am really enjoying. So far they have inspired me to at least start playing at least three games that I have including: 100 Years War, Patton's Best and Axis & Allies Miniatures! This is definitely a good thing for a guy that only gamed maybe "once or twice a year" other than at conventions prior to the podcast.
More rewarding however is the fact that I have inspired at least one other miniature wargamer, Patrick Smyrl, to start a very entertaining and fun game of his own using 2HW "All Things Zombies" Rules! I highly encourage you to stop by and read the battle reports he has posted so far staring the intrepid, SSG Buck Smith http://pshobbyshed.blogspot.com/!
Well please remember to check this site and our show http://solowargamingshow.mypodcast.com/index.html frequently as I do random updates as the need arises. And please email me with comments, suggestions or letters for the show!!
God Bless.
Some of you may know that I used to write a column for the online miniature gaming magazine Fictional Reality called Standing Orders. For those not familiar with Standing Orders here is the introductory paragraph I used for the first installment:
"Standing Orders grew out of my hobby within a hobby of collecting miniature gaming rules and other rules very close to miniature gaming rules. Being the type of person who has never seen a set of rules he didn’t like, which doesn’t mean I’ve never “bought” a set of rules I didn’t like, I have tried to summarize and/or profile the different types and sets of rules that I have collected over the years in order to make it easier for me to refer back to them many months later.
Once I decided to actually begin the undertaking I figured it wouldn’t hurt to share it with other gamers like you, who may not have as many rule sets as me but have more than one or two you haven’t really broken down yet.
A word of caution is in order however because Standing Orders is not a game “review”. I haven’t played all of the game rules I have and when you read some of the Standing Orders profiles you will probably know why. Others I just haven’t had an opportunity to spread them out on a table with my miniatures and actually fight out a battle."
Many of the "reviews" of the games that I did were done from a "solo" point of view so I thought they might be of interest to listeners of the Solo Wargaming Show as well.
This site is up by "popular demand" as it were and is mainly intended as an "outlet" website for pictures, information and anything else relating to the podcast that can't be included at the Mypodcast.com.
In general each Episode will have its own Gallery, all other items, materials, news or information will usually appear on the home page or blog!
